Oh, for an apple!

I walked through the town of Newport on the Isle of Wight today, really fancying an apple. I would have thought that in a high street that would be quite a straightforward thing to find, but it appears not. I was even tempted by an apple logo on a clothes shop!

It made me realise just how much things have changed in the modern towns of today, in that you can’t always find the essentials.

Maybe I don’t know Newport well enough, but it would appear as if I needed a car to get my apple this lunchtime.

I settled for some dried apple instead!

Sadly this is the same in too many town centers. Bet you could buy crisps easy enough!

The next time you fancy an apple check your Blackberry (or iPhone or other smartphone). With Google Maps you can search for anything, anywhere and it gives you various details and directions. It’s not as romantic as finding a market with colourful stalls full of apples but it gets you your apple in case of emergency! I typed newport+wight+supermarket and my Blackberry said Somerfield in Pyle Street! If you were walking down High Street it was only a few blocks away and you wouldn’t have needed a car. I checked their website and they have Gala apples on sale with 50% extra for free! Wow! :-)
I also buy these over here in Amsterdam, they are delicious.
But I agree that towns have changed over the years also here in the Netherlands, every town or village you visit has the same shops in the main streets, I’m lucky that I don’t like shopping.
I hope you managed to find a fresh apple in the meantime.
Bon appetit!

Ellen,

Next time you need to stroll up St James’ Street from the crossroads, then into Upper St James’ Street. There you will find a proper greengrocer, Farmhouse Fayre. Newport for real is hidden behind, and above, the faceless, soulless façade of the High Street, which is just more plate glass anywhere shops. You need to explore a bit, the town is full of weird and wonderful shops. And look up, above the monotony are some fabulous buildings too.
